'Routine' planetary survey... Nah, too easy.

The Starship Defiant's landing party had just shuttled down to a planet just inside the new Federation border when the science officer detected unusual activity in the corona of the star. Five minutes later, the computer determined that the crew would see their first supernova. Which also meant, they would see the end of the planet they were on in moments.

A rapid flight back to Defiant resulted in a slightly dented shuttlepod hull, and a damaged docking arm of Defiant's shuttlebay before the captain made it back to the Bridge. A few seconds before the ship got her warp drive back online, the star had detonated and a level 10 shockwave erupted at faster than light speeds (to the extreme confusion of the science teams), splitting the planet, that just minutes ago had been very similar to Earth after the end of the Chicxulub impact, right in half.
